Set amongst the beautiful gardens of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park is the de Young Museum, currently housing the exhibition of French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk.
Upon entering the exhibition you have to stop and blink a few times before realising that the voices, whether speaking to or serenading you in song are coming from the animated faces of the mannequins displaying the exquisite designs. You are met by Gaultier the mannequin himself, welcoming you to his show in such a realistic way that it is almost disconcerting. It is a superbly designed exhibition, each animated mannequin with its own personality, attitude, line to say or even harmony in the case of one particular cluster of singing mannequins.
Gaultier is a true visionary and mastermind. I have never seen so much creativity and exquisiteness in one place. Every design had a catch, nothing was just simple beauty. Even in a stunning ball gown you would suddenly notice the features of a face sewn onto it or upon gazing at a dress adorned with vintage features you suddenly realize they are sewn onto denim pants that have been re-stitched to make a gorgeous gown. Gaultier takes creativity and beauty to another level and is showcased perfectly in this superbly designed exhibition. Jean Paul Gaultier is a prolific gift to the world of fashion and I hope you enjoy the following images from the exhibition.
